The end of August

August road trip
Acrylic ink on
watercolour paper
and pencil
Barbara Muir © 2022

I'm following doctor's orders and my back feels a bit better. Good
because it's got to. No pressure.

For the last couple of years at the end of August I've showed
you this little painting, which honours our trip across Canada
to the Maritimes.  This year that prospect
awaits us. Which is why
my back must get back on track! I wish you a very happy September,
and yes we
had a wonderful August despite the crazy heat.

So soon we'll make that trip and see all the wonders Canada can
offer.  It is a beautiful country.  For now concentrating thinking
positively.  I wrote in my journal that joy is a powerful force. And
I just had dinner with Steven -- therefore. Yes.  Joy.

Have a loving your life day!

Friendship and movie night

Carol Anne and me
(Journal sketch)
Marker on bond paper
6 x 8 inches
Barbara Muir © 2022

I love this sketch of me and my friend Carol Anne, who was my next-door
neighbour when I lived in Ottawa as a child. Carol Anne was feisty, funny
and always had cool ideas.

I am decidedly not cool, and obviously shy in this image taken no doubt from
one of my father‘s beautiful photographs of the time. One of the things I like
about it is the palm tree brooch that’s holding my sweater together.

I had a very sweet aunt who always brought home gifts when she travelled,
and that enamel pin of palm trees was one of those presents. She was a
sweetheart, and I’m sorry she’s gone.

I have no idea what happened to Carol Anne. I lost touch with my childhood friends in Ottawa for the most part when we moved to Toronto. I hope she’s having
a wonderful life.

A favourite journal drawing

Journal Sketch
marker on journal paper
6 x 8 inches
Barbara Muir © 2024

Painting whenever I could today – which wasn’t for long. I am still having quite
bad back pain. So today’s blog post. Is going to be short again.

Thank goodness for the sketches I did on a regular basis in my morning
journals as often as possible. They give me something to share with you today.
Take care of yourselves and I hope you don’t have any back pain, or any
other kind of pain.

Still recovering

Journal Sketch
marker on journal paper
6 x 8 inches
Barbara Muir © 2024

Dealing with a super sore back today, and working on recovering. The heating
bag is my constant companion and seems to work.  I tried going for a walk,
and that didn't work.  At least I did see the exceptionally beautiful day, before
we abruptly turned around, and I went back to bed.

I have been doing my journal pages -- three pages a day -- which helps to get
me organized, plus trying to stay off my devices when possible, actual
writing helps.  I haven't done much drawing in my journal lately, but I've done
the writing.  Here's what I said in a former post:

"Writing 2 or 3 pages in a journal as I drink my morning coffees (3), and do a quick
sketch, gets my day off to a good start. So I'm trying to keep going.

I like this sketch of a guy sitting in a café in Paris, because he looks so Parisian --
the elegant scarf, tied the way only Parisian men seem to be able to achieve. And
even his winter coat -- what you can see -- is an elegant wool trench coat. Thinking
about Paris always makes me happy."

It always makes me and Steven happy too.And surely happiness is part of healing
right?

Have a loving your life day.

Ready for a new day

New Day
Acrylic on canvas
36 x 48 inches
Barbara Muir © 2009
(The painting I was finishing
when the Oprah Winfrey Show
producers called, and asked
me if I'd like to draw Oprah via Skype.
My answer? Yes!)

This is the portrait I was working on in 2009 when I got the call from
Oprah Winfrey’s people asking me if I’d draw Oprah live via Skype.
To say that was one of the most exciting calls of my life is putting it mildly.

Concentrating a bit too hard on painting the other day. I hurt my back! Big
time. I did not paint today — in fact I spent most of the day in bed with a
heating bag on the sore spot.

But this painting New Day reminded me of the excitement of possibility.
In the art show I was finishing the painting for in 2009, it got hung beside
an artist charging almost nothing for their work.

But the painting literally was the start of a new day for me. Oprah’s call opened
up the doors of my artistic life. Since then I've been on many TV shows,
shown in Florence, Italy, Paris, France in the Louvre three times, and in
New York City, 10 times, and in California.
 My thanks to my wonderful
model Shakoya, and to Oprah Winfrey, who I will be grateful to forever.

My life has been a whirlwind of creation and opportunity. So when this
painting appeared as I scrolled today, I knew it was a message from me
to see things in a new way, and to know I will be fine maybe tomorrow.
I already feel a bit better.

Happy International Dog Day Sally

Sally
Photo
Brigitte Sharpe © 2024

Although my pets – a dog, and a cat might disagree about who is the better pet,
it doesn’t matter. This is International Dog Day. And I think after 12 years in our
family, and one year before we had her during which she had three owners, Sally,
our sweet dog, deserves the recognition today.

So we sang Happy International Dog Day to her to the tune of Happy Birthday and she joined in. Happy Birthday is her favourite song, plus she loves the reward of a dog cookie at the end of the song.

Sally is a beautiful dog, and wonderful to be with, and we love her. She is both blind and deaf at the moment, and somehow manages to stay happy and to love her life --which is super. Happy International Dog Day Sally, and to all dogs.

Break at the water

Swans on the lake
Photo
Barbara Muir © 2025

Trying to finish two paintings has been my challenge for today. And as so often happens I don’t feel like I’m done.

Sometimes what works is to get away from the studio and the paintings. So I was delighted when Steven invited me to go and walk beside Lake Ontario, at one of our favourite parks. Fortuitously we ended up having dinner at a restaurant with tables out on the patio facing the lake. So I watched the sunset as I ate an absolutely delicious meal with my Sweetheart. Now back to work!

Enjoying the day -- our wedding Monthaversary

Steven's canned peaches (no sugar)
Photo
Barbara Muir © 2025

It was our Monthaversary of our wedding day today.  And of course we wished each other a Happy Monthaversary. It was a beautiful day -- amazing clouds. I worked on one of my paintings today for an upcoming show.  Last night I froze some fresh, organic peaches from the Farmer's market, and today Steven began the canning process.  The jars of peaches look so beautiful! And next February on a cold, dark day -- fresh summer in a jar.

Tomorrow, more painting and another wonderful week of summer.

Movie night and a work in progress

Untitled (Work in Progress)
Acrylic on canvas
18 x 24 inches
Barbara Muir © 2025

This is one of the paintings I'm working on. And there is quite a lot to
do.  I know.  I guess I just wanted to show you, as proof, maybe to
myself, that I am working on it.

Photographing a piece is a good step too, because what isn't what
you're trying to express stands out quite dramatically.  It's been a
great day.  We took a friend to the market, booked our trip out east,
and we're getting ready to watch a fun movie.

Monthaversary of our first date

Acrylic ink on
cradled birch
6 x 6 inches
Barbara Muir © 2020
Today is the Monthaversary of our first date. Yes we're weird, and
we celebrate that date every month.  Tonight I asked Steven to do
something different.  And we went back to the alleyway attached
to the parking lot behind the house where I was living when we
had our first date. And we kissed in the alleyway, just like we
did on that first date.

So sweet.  Got back in the car, went home -- watched TV with
the cat and the dog, but it was adorable to see that spot -- which
we've never bothered returning to, and to be so happy that
we love each other more now than those excited kids we
were.

The peaches seem right because I'm about to eat one, and they
are celebratory.  Big time.  So delicious. Steven is going to
be canning them this weekend.

Playing with colour -- the year of strange green

Three in Green
Acrylic on canvas
8 x 8 inches
Barbara Muir ©

I spent more time today on an unusually detailed painting. Scrolling through my blog I found this painting, and it made me happy because the green (not my favourite colour except in nature) is vibrant.  What's funny is that most of the time I'm not a fan, but these three stood out for me, and clearly stood
out in the crowd.

Last summer a very bright, light green was in fashion. This year a colour I call "dead green" is in.  It's something like army green only even more lifeless, and in my city, everyone is wearing it.  No idea why.  Is it an unconscious statement about all the untimely wars, and the soldiers policing
cities to the south of us? Or is it a desire for ultimate subtlety?

I love this painting, small as it is of people walking on the boardwalk in Quebec City.  I'm hoping when we go this year it's cool enough to walk there. Last year it was way too hot.

Have a loving your life day.

The magic of possibility

Monet the cat visits the studio
(She approved)
Photo
Barbara Muir © 2025

I'm working on two paintings for an upcoming show, and they're
coming along.  It rained today, and we needed it so badly.  But
I was writing in my journal about excuses, thinking of all the
excuses I could make to not do my work. (First thing in the
morning I'm not quite alert until my third coffee.) And I was
trying to switch myself to the positive.

Then Steven came up from his basement office for lunch, and we
sat on our back porch because it was beautifully cool. (It has been
too hot to sit outside some days).  And all of a sudden the sun came
out and shone on every leaf, making the whole rain soaked
scene sparkle as the light shone on the raindrops.  It was
magical.  And I said,"huh this is like a demonstration of
possibility." (True I needed more coffee.) Then when Steven
went back to work, it rained for the rest of the afternoon.

I went in and worked on my paintings.  Not finished yet.
But I thought you'd like to see my cat Monet, who I asked to
pose for a studio shot, and she agreed.  Magical. No the painting
is not finished.  She knew that.

Forward, forward and remembering what was wonderful is new each time

The image here is a little movie I took years
ago while walking on the vast beach
that's created at low tide in the Minas
Basin in Nova Scotia.
To get an idea of the scale of the cliffs notice the size of the tall
trees, and the houses when you can see them in
the distance.  This is one vast space. The sound is the wind.

I'm reading a very good book that advises us to view what we're doing from
the perspective of ourselves at 100 looking back. I like the writing, so I keep
reading, but also realize I'm a BHN fan. Be Here Now.  What matters to me
is what happens in the present moment -- like writing to you right now.

I have been painting all day trying to finish works for an upcoming show.
Scrolling through my blogs I found this video, and loved it.  Here's what
I said in a past post about it. Clearly memories also matter.

"These memories are vital and profound.  We've seen so much beauty on our
travels. I was talking to Steven today about memories.  He wishes he'd kept
better records of where he's been and what he's done.  But we need to live
in the present moment.  Cherish the past of course, but as my friend
Melinda Esparza, the wonderful artist in Tucson, Arizona says, "Forward,
forward like the dogs."

Painting all day and dreaming of the lake

Sunday evening at Lake Ontario
Photo
Barbara Muir © 2025

It’s been a lovely, and very busy day. I am working on three paintings –
none of them finished. Had so much fun, drawing a flower painting
while talking to a friend who was at her cottage.. The joyous cottage
vibe was coming through the phone and inspiring me.  Sometimes a
painting just starts off well, and keeps going that way. I think this will be
one of them. But it isn't ready to show you.  Not yet.

For now, I’m posting this photo from our trip to the lake yesterday,
that may become a painting someday who knows?

I'd hoped to show you a video tonight of Georgia taking you
through the show, but I seem to be having computer problems
and couldn't get the video to upload, or link.

I hope I figure that out for tomorrow's, post.
The show is spectacular.

And as I said yesterday come out to the opening September 28

It’s worth the drive to Oshawa to the Robert McLaughlin Gallery to see the exhibition by my friend Georgia Fullerton. Her work is so exciting, and she has a beautiful exhibition space so if you’re free on the afternoon of September 28 from 1- 3 p.m. I would make a point of going to the opening.  I know
I'm going to be there.

It's a beautiful gallery, and an exciting show.

See you there I hope.

Sad about our neighbours moving -- and summer going so fast

Summer love

Love this little painting -- maybe I should do a big one.  It sums up
what we see on our trip across Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and
Nova Scotia.  This year that happens next month. Canada you are so beautiful.

I am still working on a new painting today. We spent a fabulous evening
at a neighbourhood party across the street.  So delightful. So sad that our
friends are moving away.  But we're grateful that they'll be in Toronto.
We will get together.

Major helpers -- Flora Doehler

Flora Thinking
Acrylic on canvas
8 x 8 inches
Barbara Muir ©

I discovered this painting in a box of small paintings
in our cold room tonight. And I love it. My friend
Flora Doehler has been such a helper in my painting life.
She encouraged me to start blogging about a year before
I did. My son Christopher got my blog going and I am
extremely grateful to him. And Flora had been on my
case to get it together. I am so grateful to her.

I learned about the vivacity of acrylic ink from Flora too.
And she has inspired me in too many ways to share here.
Apparently she posed over Skype for me. So she was part of
that exciting story, which thanks to Howard Wolinsky's push
to see Skype paintings for a Skype blog he was doing at the
time, attracted the interest of the people at the Oprah Winfrey
show, and lead me to one of the most amazing experiences in
my art career -- drawing Oprah live via Skype on her show. So
this portrait makes me happy.  Thank you for your help and
encouragement Flora.

Forgive the layout issues with this post.  My web helper is
off for a week, so we'll fix it when she returns.

Summer views

Full Tank
Watercolour on watercolour paper
9 x 12 inches
Barbara Muir ©

In a month or so we'll go on the road trip to Nova Scotia that inspired this
painting, and a few others like it about being on the road.  Watching movies
set in Italy and France, I'm glad to see that these big cars are not the
dominant ones.  Small cars are a practical choice in towns where the
streets were built centuries ago. Although a friend from Paris just told me
I was wrong. There are SUVs in Paris.

In a way SUVs are practical, because they can hold the kids, the pets, and
luggage.  But they require a lot of energy to run, and in cities with narrow
streets they make negotiating traffic difficult.  Steven and I have cars.
But they are getting rarer to find.  In fact Ford is no longer selling cars
in Canada.

Still I like this painting of a very pretty SUV filling up on the road.

Wonder Water Image #6
Acrylic on canvas
30 x 30 inches
Barbara Muir ©
SOLD
(The model for this painting is
a wonderful young woman.)

Painting all day today on a smaller ocean painting, and a post I
saw scrolling through my blog made sense for today. So here it
is slightly edited:

"The first time I saw the ocean was when I visited my sister in
Philadelphia, and we went to the Jersey shore.  The ocean was
so magnificent, and I'd never seen it. I was hooked. I've loved
being near the ocean ever since. In some ways Steven and I have
worked together to design our life around the ocean.  We have a
rustic little school house near Pugwash, Nova Scotia, and when we are
there we usually go to our favourite beach every day, rain or shine.

This year with fires coming on not far from the Nova Scotia border,
we're not sure if we can get there. Last year it was very hot when we
went at the end of July, first week in August.

Still I know that our oceans are so beautiful. The mesmerizing sound
of the waves is addictive and calming. And there are so many fascinating
creatures living on the beach and in the water.

We need to save our oceans from the plastic onslaught we've
been subjecting them to. The wonderful woman in this painting
is working hard on making this a better world.  Thank you
Etana."

Today I'm reposting my blog from this day last year.  It seems perfect. As far as painting goes I am gessoing two layers on two canvasses and doing underpaintings, so at this point the visuals are not very exciting. We're so lucky to have two wonderful sons, and that they in turn have brought two amazing daughters-in-law into our family. I love the love shared by our family.  So on this special day I honour those great people, and am so grateful for all of the joy they've brought into our lives.

A Peach of a Day

Peach party
12 x 12 inches
Acrylic on canvas
Barbara Muir ©

Today was a great day all day.  It's late and I'm very tired, and so happy thinking about it.
On our minds all day was a cherished family member's birthday.  We couldn't get together because we are currently in different places, but we left wishes, and Happy Birthday songs via the phone and messages.

Plus today we got to see a dear friend who was the coordinator for the three Carousel du
Louvre exhibitions I was in in the Louvre in Paris.  She is a wonderful, funny, brilliant
woman and we had a great time with her -- taking her around to show her our very
not Paris life.  She has been on holiday in Ontario, and is heading back to Paris, so
we were delighted to get together.

As for peaches -- the time is coming.  Steven has ordered organic peaches with the
person in the market who sells peaches by the basket -- so as soon as possible we will
be in process -- Steven does the canning (no sugar), and I freeze trays of chopped up
peaches.  Such a treat as winter closes in (a few months from now thank goodness.)

and had super conversations.

Thinking about Europe and a friend who's visiting from Paris
tomorrow, I saw this journal entry and thought -- perfect!

I'm still working on a complicated painting.  So have a great day

International Cat Day

Fiona
Acrylic on mounted birch panel
5 x 7 inches
Barbara Muir © 2014

Today is International Cat Day, and without knowing that I put this painting up on
the mantle in our TV room today, so we could see our cat Fiona every night when
we settle on the couch to watch our favourite show.  Fiona died in June at 17 1/2 years
old and we miss her terribly.

In fact our next door neighbour, who has a dog, was talking about thinking
about getting a cat today.  And I get it.  We love cats.

We now have one beautiful cat and a sweet dog.  I don't have a painting of
our young cat -- Monet -- but she is a beauty.

So the painting is of Fiona, and here's to cats -- one of the most delightful animals
on the planet. Smart, affectionate, tidy, funny, playful, loving.  The best.
We love our dog -- make no mistake.  Plus our dog Sally loves our cat, and she loves
Sally.  If you have a cat, or cats Happy International Cat Day.

Have a loving your life day.

The arrival of the bees and wasps means summer is speeding along

The Maple syrup fans on the back porch
Photo
Barbara Muir ©

A sign that summer is almost over is the invasion of the syrup fans on our
back porch.  We love sitting out on the porch, but we've hit the season when
we have to think of a way to keep the bees and wasps away.  This gimmick
makes then happy and uninterested in us.  All it takes is a plate -- put on a
surface away from where you want to sit, and some maple syrup.

Suddenly the creatures are busy and you can have your coffee.

Love keeps returning

View of the river
Photo
Barbara Muir © 2022

I met a woman today at the second opening of the Let's Play show, who had recently
lost her partner.  I felt so badly for her.  It made me think of this post, because we
visited this boat launch on my parents' old street last weekend. Love doesn't go away.
I enjoyed a lot of meetings with people at the opening. Some serious and some joyful.
It was great.  Here's what I said before:

"My parents would be shocked I think to know that whenever Steven and I
visit Ottawa, we now go out to a place where we can buy chicken wraps,
and then drive to the end of my parents' street to the boat launch to look at
the water.  After my mother died, a multi-millionaire bought her cottage-like
house, tore it down and built a pretentious, squarish mansion.  It couldn't be more
different than what my parents enjoyed.

But as I've said before, my parents taught me to love water. Every summer
from the time that I was
two they drove our whole family to a cottage that
was a 2 1/2 hour
drive from Ottawa. We swam every day, canoed, and loved
the views on the
lake. When we moved to Toronto, my uncle sold the
cottage we'd rented, and that pleasure was over, so it was extra special
when my parents moved back to Ottawa and they were right on the Ottawa river.

That place also held special memories for me. Wonderful visits with amazing
scenery."

A wonderful time in Ottawa

Ordering Dinner
Marker on drawing paper
5.5 x 8.5 inches
Barbara Muir ©

We just got home from a sweet long weekend in Ottawa, Ontario Canada.
We had a wonderful time -- hanging out in the hotel watching a new
show on the giant TV screen, driving through the countryside to see
family.  Looking at awesome views from my sister-in-law and brother's
place.

August is shaping up to be wildly busy.  So it was just what we needed
to get a break. Lovely, funny kind people. The air was rough from
the fires, and is not good here in Toronto either.  So we didn't have outdoor
time. But it was still great.

Still celebrating the anniversary of our first date

The two of us in Quebec City
watercolour and marker on
watercolour paper
9 x 10 inches
Barbara Muir ©
(This is a watercolour sketch I tried to do
as a surprise for Steven quite a while back.)

We were still busy celebrating today with family.  I was looking for
an image that would suit the occasion, and this came up.  I know
you've seen it many times, but it still does the job.  I like the post
that went with it, which seems right tonight:

"Steven and I have two monthaversaries.  How crazy eh?
Twice a month we wish one another 'Happy Monthaversary!'
One is the Monthaversary of our wedding day.  The
other is for the day we began dating. We started dating
at the end of July, and were married the following June.
We were definitely a case of love-at-first-sight, and I'm so
glad we were.  The fact that we're still together, and I'd say
happier than ever is a miracle.

The kindness and understanding of friends, great advice
from my sister, the therapist, and then a few years of
therapy with a really great therapist during harder times
helped us learn how to be happy, and in love.  Apparently
we make the decision to fall in love on the cellular level. I am
grateful to my cells for that decision.  And I'm grateful to the
wide community in our lives for helping us to grow up
together.

And above all I'm grateful to my sweetheart for loving me
no matter what.  I am so glad we share an overwhelming
love of funny, a delight in our family, and the antics of
our animals.  It's also lucky that we share a love of nature, and
are touched by small things like the flowers blooming
valiantly in our garden despite the high heat of recent
weeks. So Happy belated Monthaversary to you Steven, and
I hope that my other blogger friends have people in their lives who
mean as much to them as you mean to me.

If you don't have someone who loves you this much now,
I am wishing that that person walks through the door in
the next few weeks.  Be ready."

Movie night and celebrating that first date

Me and Steven on the beach we love in Nova Scotia.
We are not there now.  Not sure when we're going, but can't wait!

It's movie night, and we just came home from having a wonderful dinner
with family.  Steven and I are celebrating our anniversary of our first date
a little after the fact. A lot of the discussion tonight was about art, and I love what I said about it in this former post:

"10 Reasons art makes you happy!
1. You get to really see.  It is apparently true that artists see more and see differently than other people.  We are blessed with really seeing
what is out there.

2.  You get to make what no one has seen until you make it.  Even
artists who like to refer to the real world, and try to reproduce it
just as it is, are always making something new.  What a treat!

3. You are entranced by the world.  Colour is magical, simply
drawing in a notebook is a passion -- you live a blessed life.

4. You are always learning.  No one sane says to a four year old
that that superb painting she just created isn't art. And that is true
of every age. Art is for life.

5. You become part of a world filled with new ideas, excitement, experimentation and brave expression. You make friends and spend
time with other artists who care as much about colour and light
as you do.

6.  You make people happy with your work. When I paint portraits,
I frequently paint either people who want a portrait to record a momentin their lives, or the people who the people love. When the painting is finished, collectors usually react by spontaneously hugging me
with joy -- an awesome feeling.

7.  You make yourself happy with what you make.  It's a wonderful feeling to sit in your studio and see the work you've created.  Each
painting brings back a memory and challenges you -- making you wonder what you will try next.

8. You get to travel to superb places in the worldwhere you will either take photos for future paintings, paint or draw on the spot to record the
moment, or exhibit your work and jet off to the opening!  So much fun!

9.  You get to sell your work to people who really appreciate what you do.  You are living the dream -- doing what you love to do and getting paid for it!

10.  You go to bed each night excited about the next day, and the work you are currently doing.  You cannot get your work out of your mind.  In your sleep you dream about new paintings and how you'll handle them.

Author's note: These are the happy aspects
of art.  I know that the opposite experiences
happen too, but this list is about happy.  ;-)"

August first has been a crazy day -- and all is well!

You know those days when everything that should go right, goes wrong.  Today
was one of those days and it wasn't.  Extremely frustrating.  Traffic at a
standstill, and we had somewhere to go.  Waits on the road, for up to 3/4
of an hour.  But hey!  What was good?  Working with a wonderful friend, a
delicious dinner with my sweetheart made by a Thai chef who knows us and
was glad to see us.

And this painting makes me happy. It sums up in a way the incredible beauty
I saw today.

Have a loving your life day!
