(I wish we could have visited this lovely place together
Chloé. I'll think of you when I go there.)
Dear Chloé,

It will be the birthdays you miss that are the ones we wish you were
here for.  This is the first. I can hear your happy voice over the
phone saying "thank you Barbie." (the name only my siblings
and their children use).  I must have sent you a little money, and
you in turn would send a lovely thank you card.  You would
accept our bad singing over the phone, and the dog barking Happy
Birthday, and laugh your wonderful laugh.

I wish you were here -- on the planet, ready to take on the next
chapter in what I am sure would have been an exciting life.
But clearly you couldn't imagine it.  We miss you.  Poor, sweet,
beautiful, intelligent, talented, funny girl.  That's enough for now.

Happy Birthday.

I'm sending you hugs and kind thoughts to the beautiful lost sheep. That painting cheers me on this cold and rainy day with the wind howling outside. So sorry that sweet Chloe is gone. xoxo

love love love, and a hug, and a cuppa tea (or coffee) from me to you this day.

Dear Flora,

Thank you so much for your comforting words. I do love that painting and its happy history of
travelling to the Netherlands -- the subject of the painting -- and then coming home to live in
Toronto, where I know it is happy. We do miss Chloé and we are so sorry she is gone.

XOXOXOXOXO Barbara

Dear Verna,

Thank you. Yesterday on Chloé's birthday, I did have a cup of coffee, and spoke to her
father. My heart was very sad, but I attended an inspiring art show, and prepared for
a happy family dinner today. Chloé's photo is in my studio. So I see it every
day and think of her. If only she could have known how much she was loved,
and been able to enjoy that knowledge.

XOXOXOXO Barbara
